Duties
Career Opportunities in United States Department of State
At American diplomatic missions across the globe, Facility Managers (FMs) are the in-house professionals with expertise in facilities, technical aspects, and operations. FMs assist the Bureau of Overseas Buildings Operations (OBO) in providing a wide range of building-related services, overseeing vital building systems, and managing operations in official and residential properties to U.S. industry-level standards. They are assigned to more than 200 locations globally. FMs play a crucial role in the management teams of our consulates and Embassies, overseeing sizable and varied groups of technicians, engineers, and tradespeople. FMs may be designated as Regional Facility Managers, managing programme activities concurrently across multiple nations.
Requirements
Conditions of Employment
- Be a U.S. citizen and accept assignments based on the needs of the FS.*
- Be able to obtain a Top Secret Security Clearance.
- Be able to the minimum medical qualification standard.
- Be able to obtain a favorable Suitability Review Panel determination.**
- Be at least 20 years old to apply; at least 21 years old to be appointed.
- Be appointed prior to age 60 (preference eligible veterans excepted).
The Department of State’s real estate assets abroad are operated and maintained by Foreign Service Facility Managers (FM) in the Bureau of Overseas Buildings Operations (OBO).
The greatest values of honesty, reliability, diligence, collaboration, and teamwork must be upheld by a facility manager, who must also accept the necessity of travelling, relocating abroad, and, in certain cases, living apart from family.
Qualifications
Specialised Experience shows that the candidate has obtained and is capable of using a particular set of skills, knowledge, and abilities relevant to this role. The qualifying experience needs to have been completed in the previous ten years. At least 60% of the work duties must include a combination of the elements listed below to qualify as specialised experience. Experience working part-time will be prorated.
Education
At the time of application, applicants MUST have one of the following:
- Bachelor’s degree in any major and three years of Specialized Experience in the last 10 years; or
- Master’s degree or higher in any major and two years of Specialized Experience in the last 10 years; or
- Bachelor’s degree or higher in Facility Management/Facilities Engineering (does not require Specialized Experience).
Part-time work experience will be prorated.
